Baby & Child Reflexology
Reflexology is a gentle therapy. It is both safe and effective to use with babies and children. It helps to nurture your relationship with your baby or child by developing a sense of security and attachment. Touch is the first sense to develop in a foetus and infants will use touch to discover the world around them as they develop. You can introduce reflexology to your child at any stage and enjoy the potential benefits. It can be carried out at any time of the day or become part of the bedtime routine.
Babies are especially responsive to reflexology. Many mothers will instinctively rub their child’s feet and hands when they are crying or uncomfortable. Reflexology works very well for most babies and children. By applying gentle pressure to particular reflex areas on the feet, blockages can be released to restore the flow of energy to the whole body.
Treatment times are short and age depending. Reflexology with children can begin from birth and can be a valuable tool for parents to dissipate their children’s stresses in a nurturing way. As your baby gets older and begins walking the use of reflexology can also be combined with checking the development of the feet. If you ever have any concerns about your child’s foot development then speak with your GP. Our feet are the foundation of our mobility and must be looked after all through life.

A little about “Positive Touch”
There is a lot of research out there supporting how ‘positive touch’ and ‘tactile stimulation’ promote your baby’s brain development and the strong nurturing bond between parent and baby. In recent years, many studies have documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. Dr Dacher Keltner from the UC Berkeley Department of Psychology, USA, notes that the research is suggesting that “touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health. The benefits start from the moment we’re born”.
A review of research, conducted by Dr Tiffany Field, Director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine and a leader in the field of touch, found that preterm newborns who received just three 15-minute sessions of touch therapy each day, for 5-10 days, gained 47% more weight than premature infants who had received standard medical treatment. Dr Field also believes “a massage before bedtime is more effective than rocking at helping your baby fall asleep and stay asleep.” The beauty and joy of reflexology is that it is one way to introduce positive touch to children to enjoy as they grow up.
